28 September 2021

Brent Community Lottery celebrates its 1st £25,000 jackpot win since launching in January 2020. This is truly something special to celebrate both for the lucky winner and the local community that the lottery supports.

Play The Lottery

Brent Community Lottery is an online fundraising solution provided by Brent Council with, believe it or not, no upfront costs. It’s designed to help local not-for-profits to diversify their fundraising streams online and enable year-round fundraising in a safe, fun and effective way.

Buy a ‘chance’ and support the local community today by playing the lottery. There are currently 44 registered causes to choose to support with your ticket purchase. The chosen cause receives 50% of the £1 ticket with an additional 10% going to further support the local community. There are weekly cash prizes to be won up to the value of the £25,000 jackpot. With 50:1 odds of winning a prize, you’ll find a bit of fun at the same time as knowing you’re really helping your local community.

The lucky winner was delighted to receive their prize and is very happy to see the benefits going to their chosen cause – Sickle Cell Society.

"I support the cause because I met the previous Major Ernest, at a charity event. He explained the Sickle Cell condition and how it impacts young people throughout their lives. He really seemed to want to help young people and we wanted to help him do this by signing up for the lottery from when it was first launched.

"I would recommend playing the lottery. Not only are you helping charities help those in need but you have a chance of winning money that could help you achieve your own personal goals.

"The winnings will be spent on paying off my car loan, some will go towards my daughter's wedding and an amazing holiday. It has made me feel, shocked, grateful and over the moon!

"You have to be in it to win it. Sign up on a direct debit and forget about it. You win either way, satisfaction by giving something back to your community or if you're lucky like me, a £25,000 bonus on top!" anon Jackpot winner

John James OBE, CEO of Sickle Cell Society was over the moon to discover that one of their supporters won the jackpot. They said;

"The Sickle Cell Society is the only national charity in the UK that supports and represents people affected by a sickle cell disorder to improve their overall quality of life. Sickle Cell Disorder (SCD) affects over 15,000 people in the UK and almost 300 children are born each year with SCD. This painful condition changes the form of normally healthy red blood cells into a ‘sickle’ shape, making it difficult for cells to move freely through the body or carry enough oxygen – including to parts of the brain, which results in a significantly increased incidence of stroke and other complications. SCD can affect anyone, although it predominantly affects people from African and Caribbean backgrounds.

"Having the Sickle Cell Society based in Harlesden enables us to be a central hub for everyone in the sickle cell community across the UK (as we are conveniently located 5 minutes walk from London’s underground and overground with direct routes to the Midlands). This is particularly convenient as Birmingham has the largest population of people with SCD outside of London.

"Brent has been a major contributor to the ground floor refurbishment of our premises and thus enabled us to provide better facilities for local SCD people as well as staff. We are most grateful to Brent for supporting our cause.

"We have a great relationship with the London Borough of Brent and we thank them for their support over the years. We heard about the Lottery through our contacts at the Council. Brent Community Lottery is a great initiative for local people with chances to win cash prizes and of course it also helps to raise much needed funds for local charities like the Sickle Cell Society.

"Our team aims to improve the quality of life for people with the condition and we strive to help adults, children and their families in three main areas: Condition management skills, education and employment prospects and overall quality of life

"To help others achieve positive changes in their lives, we deliver the following services:

• National Helpline and Information Service (Information Standard certified) a trusted source of specialist advice via telephone, email and face-to-face.

• Children’s activity programme including educational holidays and peer mentoring.

• Outreach services in areas of high SCD prevalence.

• Assisting with SCD medical and social research globally.

• Campaigning/lobbying for policy to reduce health inequalities.

• Advocating for clients’ rights to health, education, welfare, housing and employment.

• Increasing understanding of SCD/SCT (Sickle Cell Trait) to enable families to make informed decisions regarding relationships and family planning regarding this inherited condition.

"We believe that individuals with sickle cell have the right to quality care. This can only be achieved if funding is made available to educate health carers and other professionals about the condition. The Society aims to provide this. The support of Brent Community Lottery is very important to us as it contributes to our ability to deliver our services.

"Being based in Brent and having the support of Brent Community Lottery means that we have the facilities to welcome patients where we can provide face to face support, a place for specialist Healthcare Professionals to learn and share emerging treatments/therapies, and become the central fountain of sickle cell knowledge in the UK. We highly recommend joining in the Brent Community Lottery."
